Sometimes reading the book isn't enough. During this recurring blog segment, Book Interrupted members share songs that made their playlist and why.
Perhaps a little to peppy to be played in an actual funeral home, this playlist is inprired by the graphic memoir Fun Home by Allison Bechdel. Listen to the full Spotify playlist here. Check out all our book-inspired playlists here on our YouTube channel.

This is Me by The Greatest Showman cast
Lindsay:
‘When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown 'em out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me’
This song is so empowering and it reflects some of the themes in Fun Home about self discovery and being true to who you are.
Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day
Kara:
“I chose the song "Wake Me Up Before September Ends" by Green Day not necessarily because the song is a perfect match to the graphic novel, "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel, but because emotionally the song and book seem trapped in the same space. I remember reading an article once that quoted the band's frontman as saying that the title of the song is a tribute to what Billie Joe Armstrong said after his father's death when he was 10yrs old - a sentence he had been carrying with him for years until he later wrote the song. The main character of the novel strikes me as trapped in some way to the time around when her own father died."
About Damn Time by Lizzo
Lia:
"I chose all my songs because they feel like change and positive progress. Just like the spring weather has finally made it to Ontario. These songs feel like things are getting better. Sun's out, Fun's out!!!
And I hope this book cycle for Fun Home is just that. FUN!!!"
Ulysses by Franz Ferdinand
Meredith:
"Ulysses is referenced heavily in Fun Home, with Allison Bechdel even taking a college course on Ulysses. I haven't read it myself, but I do love this fun song by Franz Ferdinand of the same name."
New York, New York by Ryan Adams
Sarah:
I chose this song because this is one of the moments in her life she keeps going back too; being in New York. Also, I love Ryan Adams, so I was glad there was a song I could use to add to one of the playlists.
