On this weeks Manuscript Monday Kara recommends "Food of the Gods: The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge" by Terence McKenna.
It's just a really cool book that looks at the historical role of altered states in human beings - whether it's spices, sugar, alcohol, drugs or television. The author explores the human desire for chemicals. He hypothesizes that altering our states of mind may have begun as a way to better understand our place in nature, and I just think that's rad. I also admire the author's bravery for speaking about plant medicine and psychedelics at a time when it was not universally accepted for people in academia to be studying the positive effects of drugs.
