On this weeks Manuscript Monday Meredith recommends Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.
Don’t worry. This is not a chemistry textbook. Set in the 1960s, Lessons in Chemistry is a charming novel about Elizabeth Zott, a talented chemist that finds herself the host of a cooking show. Directly defying her superiors by treating her viewers as more than “the typical house wife,” she not only teaches the chemistry of cooking but inspires her audience members to follow their dreams. It is funny while simultaneously shedding light on the absurd (and tragic) challenges faced by a 1960s woman working in a male dominated field. Zot is unabashedly honest, unintimidated, and determined. The book is funny and teaches the reader a little about cooking chemistry to boot.
