It is a very interesting discussion. As a stay at home homeschooling dad I find myself on the other side of the societal preconditioning. It is interesting when I am asked what I do and I say take care of my children and house etc. (I also have my degree in mechanical engineering and at times do it on the side but it humors me to hear people's responses at times.)

Replying to

As a stay at home mom with a chemical engineering degree, I relate. There is a little voice in me that wants to say "i used to be a chemical engineer." At some point I decided to silence that voice, and answer that I stay home. I now enter either "N/A" or "stay-at-home mom" on forms that require an occupation. People's reactions when I reply to their inquiries into what I "do" are varied, sometimes humourous, sometimes not.
